Till Staff (Former Employee), Morecambe – May 4, 2013
Typical day at work was to serve customers with a smile and make them feel welcome to bring them back to the store and spread the word that the staff are friendly and chatty and bring in more custom
Cashier (Current Employee), Leicester – April 29, 2013
Pros: always a shift
Cons: having to stand behind tills and no chair
A typical day at work would be a 4 hour shift, Sat 2pm-6pm and Sun 10am-2pm on tills and scanning items the customers wish to buy. I have learned to build up my social and communication skills whilst working there and also how to be confident around strangers. I have learned to be independent in some situations and what to do in some scenarios where – more... I don't have anyone to guide me. The management is good. My co-workers are very cool, it was easy to get used to them and settle in as one of them and some I continue to contact out of working hours. The hardest part of the job would probably be having to deal with unsatisfied customers and having to meet their needs. However the most enjoyable part of the job would be knowing that I am assisting other people and doing my part to make their shopping adventure satisfying. – less
sales assistant (Current Employee), nuneaton – April 17, 2013
Pros: build of the relationships with co-workers and customers.
Cons: very fast paced.
My day at work involves replenishing stock in all the different sections, and breaking down the deliveries that we have three times a week. I also work on the tills serving customers, helping customers find the products they are looking for and I give them a alternative if the item is not available. In this I work as part of a team both on the tills – more... and on the shop floor. I keep my work space as clean and tidy as possible. The most hardest part of my job is to keep the shop floor replenished as it is a fast paced shop. The most enjoyable part of my job is the relationship with my co-workers and satisfied customers. There are different things I learn everyday as we have different customers come in and for example I check the product is right for that customer if they can not see it clearly and I read clearly aloud so that the customer also knows whether that is the right product for them. The management there all have different roles and then all joined together for some of the same roles, so I know who to go to and who will deal with that situation efficiently. – less

Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee), Truro – April 14, 2013
Typical retail employment, I enjoyed meeting and talking to customers and helping them, management were fine although I did not have very much interaction with the Manager, I found that as long as you worked as was expected you were usually left alone to get on with the task at hand. Most of my co-workers were friendly, i did not find any part of the – more... job difficult. I was employed on an 8 hour contract but worked on average 37 plus hours a week. – less
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Dumfries – April 10, 2013
Learned how to work in a busy store, customer service, cash handling, team work and stock management. The most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with customers.
Sales assistant (Current Employee), Hastings – April 5, 2013
During a shift it can go from being extremely busy to extremely quite, with a huge varity of stock and customers the diversity of skill that is required becomes a constant learning enviroment. I feel i work with a strong team on all levels and with that there is never a dull moment. We all pitch in to aid each other when needed be it to help a customer – more... or even help another memeber of staff. One of the hardest parts of the job is remembering all the deals that are on sale but thats where the team helps as we can all remind each other as the POV can change frequently. One of the most enjoybable parts of the job is when a customer leaves the store satisfied with their experience knowing that we as a team and i as a sales assistant helped make that happen. – less
Work Experience (Former Employee), Stoke-on-Trent – March 13, 2013
Poundland was good for me and I was good for them, I helped them out over Christmas while they gave me the experience I needed. I stacked shelves, swept floors and helped out in the warehouse and with a couple of deliveries. I felt I learnt a lot and was ready to work full time. I was under the impression there would be a job at the end of the 2 months. – more... I enquired via phone to the manager about whether I was being taken on and I was told it wasn't busy and they weren't taking anybody on but that they had my number and they would phone me if it was busy. However I went in there a fortnight later and it was packed and full of new staff. – less

Sales assistant (Former Employee), Belfast – February 27, 2013
Pros: meeting new people
Cons: long hours
A typical day at work for me started with me going to the shop floor and checking which stock was needed for my section. I then went and got the stock that I needed and made sure my section was filled neat and tidy. Poundland was my first job in retail so I learnt everything I needed to know from poundland from doing orders for exactly what I needed – more... making sure that my section was always to the highest standerd. Me and my co-workers at poundland got on very well we also had alot of staff nites out etc. The hardest part of the job was when we had our perfect day. Sometimes we would leave the shop at 12 oclock at night and have to b back in at 5 oclock in the morning even thought it was hard work we always got 100%. The most enjoyable part of the job was when the perfect day was over and I new that all my hard work had payed off. – less
