About Us

Created in April 2017, Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) is a new agency in the Ministry of Justice, covering 121 prisons and employing over 42,000 staff. Our mission: to protect the public and rehabilitate people.

Prison Officer opportunities

There’s no such thing as a typical prison officer. Our people come from many different walks of life. What you’ll need is empathy, self-confidence and great communication skills.

That’s because, no matter how challenging the situation, you’ll take the time to build constructive, positive and professional relationships with often vulnerable offenders who are at the lowest point in their lives.

Operational Support Staff opportunities

Keeping a prison running smoothly and safely takes many things. Good judgement, common sense and responsibility to name a few. Above all, though, it takes teamwork. And as part of our Operational Support, you’ll be right at the heart of it.

By joining the team, you’ll play an essential role in the daily activity of our prisons by supporting prison officers, managing visitors, and helping to keep society safe.

What makes us difference?

If you have what we’re looking for, you can expect a lot in return. For a start, we’ll make sure you get great training and plenty of opportunities for progression and development including the chance to specialise in different areas; including dog-handling, investigative roles and search training.

In addition to a good salary, you’ll join the Civil Service pension scheme and receive financial assistance with your accommodation, as part of any government key worker housing policies in your area.

You will also receive a number of other benefits, including 25 days’ holiday allowance each year, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme and Cycle to Work scheme.

While the rewards are certainly attractive, it’s not the only thing you’ll gain from a profession in the prison service. There’s also the sense of achievement you feel when you’ve helped an offender to get their life back on track. It’s the kind of experience you simply won’t find anywhere else.
