Marks and Spencer
Merchandising Admin Assistant (Former Employee), Paddington, London – May 19, 2013
Pros: subsidized lunch.
Cons: it issues would take long to sort out.
Whilst working with Marks and Spencer, London, I enjoyed my day by learning varied software and internal working ethics.
It was interesting to know how does M&S work on such a large scale where they had in-house brands and external brands to out-stand with. Its been a tremendous journey of learning and hard work through promotion time and I am very – more... grateful I was a part of team which cooperated each other and believed in deliverable on time.

We successfully rolled out our seasonal year 12-13 in advance with launch plan. It was difficult to get fabric commitment early but minimum order was placed through well advance in time. At times it was difficult to consider the know-how of different country but by being in constant touch with suppliers we could achieve the deadlines.

I enjoyed every moment with Marks and Spencer and will continue my journey of learning with such esteemed players in market. – less

Busy and enjoyable work place.
Barista/ cafe assisstant (Former Employee), Exeter – April 14, 2013
Pros: they cared about your well being.
Cons: a lot was expected for little salary.
There was a rotation system so every hour you would change what you were working on. For instance you could be making coffee, then go on to till, then go onto preparing hot food ect. It was always extremely busy and good communication and team work was neccessary.
I was trained as a Barista during my time at Marks and Spencer and learnt how important – more... it is to listen and talk to those who you are working closely with. I learnt how to deal with difficult customers and always to remain calm.
During my time there management changed four times. We had a good repore with a couple but felt the others did not work as hard or were as organised. it was a very busy cafe and knowing your staff was vital to this role as positioning people at the right place at the right time was key to an easy day.
The hardest part of the job was how busy it could get. Customers would become restless and workers would generally make more mistakes It was difficult to stay calm and keep the pace up at times, however with time this became much easier.
The most enjoyale part of the job for me was meeting all of the customers and the converstaions you were able to have with the regulars. We knew there orders and they becam every loyal and would form a kind of friendship. – less

Interest place to work
Team Assistant (Current Employee), Heathrow Terminal 5 – April 4, 2013
Pros: free meal
Cons: long hours
I am working as a Team Assistant at Marks & Spencer Supermarket at Heathrow Airport Terminal 5. Our shop is open for the customers through out the clock. Normally my work shifts are on a roster basis. Most of the days I start my shifts at 2pm to 10pm. First of all I ensure my punctuality by reporting to work without getting delayed. Before going to – more... work I planned my day of work based on the functions and responsibilities on day to day basis. When I report to my work I take my job with sense of responsibilities and commitments. Our Shop is one of the most busiest customer orientated organization located at Terminal 5 which serves majority of Terminal 5 staff and inbound and outbound passengers. My duties includes sales, till operations, selection and price reduction of items, shelf filling, customer care. During my shift I make myself by contributing my maximum efficiency by dealing very professionally with my work. My day is completely busy with my work and I do it with a greater dedication to unsure meeting of daily targets while maintaining good image of Marks & Spencer.

I learnt about customer care and business patterns, company policies and practise to achieve profits through shop floor operations.

Our management is very strict on punctuality and commitment towards my functions.

My co-workers are very friendly, supportive and we work as a team to achieve company goals with excellent mutual understanding, cooperation and building trust.

When I do till operations throughout my shifts I have to be standing which creates fatigue. Nevertheless I have to be equally responsive to every customer to earn more business and to maintain the image of the company while earning more business.

Since the management and the staff has excellent working relationship, I am working in a very friendly atmosphere even the job is hard. As staff handling shop floor operation by equally sharing responsibilities. This has motivated me to contribute more to the company. – less

marks&spencers
sales assistant (Former Employee), york, designer outlet – April 2, 2013
A typical day work at marks&spencers in the warehouse (backstage)was to making sure all products were up to date and in order on specific racking. also ordering the deliveries.

I learned my key skills like communication, people skills, till operator, health and safety in a warehouse (backstage) and how to be a good helpful customer assistant.

The management – more... standards i would say are very high, every morning and evening they gave constructive feed back on how well we worked as an individual, as well as a team for reaching targets within the store. Every day we were given advice on all new products that were due to arrive in store.

Other colleague's who i worked with were down to earth, very pleasant, kind natured, always gave 100% to help one another, gave good advice and information when needed

The hardest part of the job was when it was very busy for example public holidays.

Most enjoyable part of the job was knowing i was helping all ages of the public and putting a big smile on there faces. – less

I've never felt so disrespected as an employee.
Customer Assistant (Current Employee), Devon – March 30, 2013
Pros: staff discount, interacting with public
Cons: pedantic about standards, lack of communication, bad management, bad work/life balance
I came to work for M&S as I believed the good work culture they always promote...I am so disappointed that it has turned out the way it has.

Several things have contributed to this since my time there. I am a temp, and therefore am treated far worse than permanent members of staff. My fellow customer assistants are all wonderful and lovely, and we – more... all work so hard everyday. Our latest mystery shop result shows this. However, this is still not good enough for management, particularly our manager. We are never thanked for our hard work, if we are it s just a fleeting "thanks" as they walk by.

I feel I am treated like a child, and we are told off for the most silly things. We are not allowed to talk to each other on shop floor (and I don't mean that we are hanging around having a full on chat and ignoring customers) I mean literally if we walk past each other and say "hello" or are alone on the tills and ask how the other is. I am a temp and so don't know the ins and outs of the store. One day I asked a colleague a work question only to be interrupted by a manager who gave us a telling off for talking.

My hours are changed every week, sometimes I have only had 24 hours notice to work until midnight, which when I said I couldn't, I was threatened I may not get kept on when my contract renews due to my "unreliability".

Marks do have quality products and customers do go away happy...but due mainly to the hard work of the customer assistants. Managers need to wake up and realise that without us and without showing us just an ounce of respect, this may not continue in the future.

I have never worked or experienced an environment as uncomfortable as this one. Such a shame Marks, I expected better. – less

Excellent team, hard work!
Project Manager (Former Employee), London – March 28, 2013
Pros: excellent benefits, lots of free courses
Cons: long hours
M&S is an excellent workplace. It has great benefits, the team I worked in was fantastic and there are lots of areas to learn and grow in. It's hard work though! People do a 45 hour week standard but this is always followed with overtime, especially in marketing.

So, A great company, great people, hard work.

Productive and Fun Workplace
Cafe Assistant (Former Employee), Royal Priors, Leamington Spa – March 12, 2013
Pros: friendly environment
Cons: long hours
When working at Marks & Spencers I developed various friendships with managers and work colleagues. A typical day at work would be serving customers, making coffee's and preparing food. I learnt that it is a skill in making coffee's to the satisfactory needs. I also learnt that providing excellent customer service enhances rewards and respect from customers. – more... The managers are very caring and considerate about my opinions and queries. The hardest part of the job can be organisation when it is busy in the cafe when we are understaffed. The most enjoyable part of the job is bonding with team mates and encouraging each other to reach the goals that we desire. – less

A family friendly place to work.
Customer Assistant (Former Employee), Camberley – March 5, 2013
Pros: free parking, free meals, free provided uniform.
Cons: long hours, working at different temperatures.
You would start the day with the daily team brief lead by the General Store Manager, talking about takings, budget, planned works for contractors and awards etc.

A delivery would come in about 1000 and my team and I would segrate the stock into various different departments around the back stage area, ie Fridge, Freezer and Ambient sections, once that – more... was done. I would liaise with my line manager over which member of staff needed my assistance in areas that they were weak in and discuss with the assistant how to go about it.

I learned that not everything is in your control but can mentaliy assess the risk and decide on the best course of action to take ie absent staff members.

My Line manager was very approachable and dealt with matters that arose very quickly in a calm senstive manner. skills that I have leant and taken with me.

The hardest part for me was christmas as we had delivery after delivery but that was what I enjoyed the most as I love a fresh challenge. – less

Productive, fun workplace
Customer service assistant, General assistant (Former Employee), Eltham,London – February 23, 2013
Pros: free lunches, working in a respected, clean and organised environment
Cons: no real cons just early shiffts
I enjoyed working at Marks and Spencer as everyone felt equal, i would wake up a think 'yes i have work again today'. The feeling that you are giving back to the public was the best feeling at all, throughout any shift and any task there was help. Help came from co--workers, managers and even the security. I can't really say there was a hard part of – more... working within Marks and Spencer only as to if you was on one of the earlier shift you ust would have had to make sure you was up and ready apart from the i LOVED working in Marks & Spencer and would return back to one of their branches immediately. – less
