Very structured and organised
Catering Supervisor (Current Employee), Huddersfield, ENG – June 10, 2013
Kirklees is a great place to work, they are very organised and have procedures for every aspect of the job.

This allows for no mistakes, but is great experience when working outside of their organisation.

Friendly and approachable people
Business Support Officer (Current Employee), Kirklees Council – April 28, 2013
Pros: learning new things
Cons: not enough holidays
I have been working for Kirklees Council for just over 2 years now. I have worked within quite a few different departments such as Council and Business Tax, Attendance and Pupil Support and now a Employee Healthcare setting. In the mentioned departments a typical day consists of me having to deal with customer service based queries. These can be face-to-face, – more... over the telephone and also via any information technology systems.

I feel that I have come to learn a great deal of skills and attributes through my various job roles at Kirklees council that I can further enhance upon each time I go into a different working environment. I can build upon the things I have learnt and in that way I am able to work to the best of my abilities to suit my role.

Management wise I have never had any problems with higher authority and always get on with people from both higher and lower ranking roles both in and out of the work place. The same applies to my co-workers too.

The hardest part of any job I think would have to be when I first start work in any new department. However I really do think that this is only natural to feel slightly nervous and have butterflies about how ones first day will go and if I will be able to take on board any new work ethics that might be put my way. But I am a good learner and love the challange of being able to tackle new work tasks head on and am not afraid to ask questions about why or how certain work rules may apply. Learning new skills and meeting diverse individuals via work is the most enjoyable aspect of my job. – less

An Enjoyable Experience
Teaching Assistant (Current Employee), Huddersfield – April 4, 2013
Pros: short days
My days vary where I work through a time table of lessons and sessions throughout my day, I will support students on the SEN register within class or on a 1-1 setting. I have learnt to support and encourage and that having an understanding and bond with your students helps them to thrive within school. The hardest part for me is coming out of a lesson – more... where the students having achieved their goals, the most enjoyable part is seeing students progress and feel confident within themselves. – less

i enjoyed working at Kirklees; good colleagues and support.
Poor management and motiativation.
Working in a politically sensitive environment.
result of gvt cuts not communicated to staff resulting in low morale.
I obtained funding from gvt and other sources and drew up regeneration plans to spend it - which was achieved.

Pros: no free lunches when working with the council, flexible working hours was also a great advantage particularly for those staff with young families.
Cons: too many restrictive practices and processes in tendering and contracting
As section manager of a Building Surveying group carrying out Repair and Maintenance of Schools and Public buildings there was never a dull moment due to unexpected problems that would arise on a daily basis.

Driven by regular mandates cascaded down from either other council departmental initiatives or from central Government, or changed due to regulatory – more... or policy changes of political parties.

The council had it's own training facilities and a training department who facilitated the learning requirements of council staff of all areas from blue collard staff of the 'trade departments' to office staff, technical and management of all levels.

Through the various management training courses attended I honed my management skills in attendance management, recruitment and selection, disciplinary protocols, technical guidance, Health and Safety responsibilities and training of staff. Also the softer skills were always covered within the management training.

I believed in an open door policy where staff could call into my office and discuss any work of personal problems or concerns as relevant.

To motivate staff, I held two one-to-one meetings with my staff every year where there progression through the salary levels were monitored and discussed and checked that they were meeting the criteria for their particular salary grade at that time. Their training needs was also discussed and new training programmes would be arranged and budgeted for to enable them to climb the progression ladder.

The hardest part of my job was managing contracts with other council departments.

The most enjoyable part of my job was giving praise to staff who had done well following feedback from clients when work had been completed to their satisfaction. – less

I enjoyed working on Reception greeting and assisting members of the public who visited the Children's Centre
Children's Centre Admin Assistant (Former Employee), Huddersfield, West Yorkshire – May 14, 2012
I had a very demanding manager who didn't have very good communication or organisational skills, the more I did the more she wanted out of me. At the end of the working day I felt very tired and exhausted.

I enjoyed helping and assisting colleagues with general office procedures and creating leaflets with the help of the Community Link Workers.

Minute – more... taking at meetings. – less

Cons: very long hours, kirklees a vast rambling locations
a typical day at work, involved, arriving very early, before the rush, to check emails, and plan for the day. Attend management planning meetings, and arrange training schedules for workers. review performance according to previous years SEF, and adjust targets accordingly.
gather supervision notes, read the notes of previous supervisions, and carry – more... out the supervisions /appraisals as scheduled for that day.
the hardest part of the job was to actually fit in everything that needed to be done as well as deal with ad hoc enquiries, and your own caseload which as the manager /team leader was often complex – less
