Productive and fun workplace
Counter Manager / Accredited Consultant (Current Employee), Debenhams Scarborough – August 29, 2012
Pros: paid breaks excpet lunch. commission at the end of the month.
Cons: long days
A typical day at work for me would entail:
1) Writing down the previous days sales and working out the target for the rest of the week/month.
2) Giving myself and staff a target to achieve that day. Sometimes using an incentive if the targets are high.
3) Helping customers find what they would like, and offering them a consultation in either skincare – more... or make-up.
4) Traffic stopping customers in store to invite them back to counter for a consultation.
5) Deal with any staffing issues.
6) Replenishing stock and ordering products and testers that are needed.

What i learn the most at work is different ways to motivate my staff. Recognizing different personalities and what encourages them.

My management are very helpful but also very figures orientated, they like to see achievements.

All of my co-workers are very friendly and we all help each other when needed.

The hardest part of my job is when we dont have enough staff on the cosmetics department and the result of this can lead to customers going elsewhere and becoming upset.

The most enjoyable part of the job is when i share all my product knowledge with a client who needs my advice and expertise, seeing them go home happy knowing they will return. I also enjoy hitting my targets, especially at the end of the month as my manager is ecstatic. – less

Cons: lots of pressure which is very different then i got before
I feel like i am not there for long enough to make any serious comments. Learning a lot about retail. In skin care you always very retail oriented but i feel like this is giving me that extra knowledge and different experience that is very interesting. I began work with Clinique back in 2003 for additional money to help put my son through college. I learned through this job how to evaluate problems ladies had with their skin and then recommend the the necessary products to address their issues. Also, i would teach the proper application of makeup techniques as well.

I've only been with Clinique 2 months, but I've learned a lot and have certainly enjoyed the gratis! The downside is definitely the long holiday hours, we're working 6 days a week, 10 hours a day. All in all, Clinique is a great stepping stone into my next career adventure!
