Good at first bad at end
Catering manager (Former Employee), Kent – February 6, 2013
Cons: long hours no thanks for the work or pay rises
I worked for. Chartwells for 6 years, and at first found them to be s good company,I worked my way up from head chef to catering manager in 6 years which is good progression, once the client decided to bring catering back in house, the senior management tried to keep the contract but failed, then I find out that the don't care about anything as they – more... were slagging me down to client.Compass need to put more training into senior area managers, compass need to think about what is more important the service or sliver/ gold standard. If its the ISO then give the people on the ground the resources to do the job. – less

Productive
Catering Assistant (Former Employee), Devon – September 18, 2012
I liked working at my job, but when we had new management come and interfere,as they thought they knew better wrong, they made it worse, perhaps if they had better training it would be ok. Got on fine with fellow workers it was just management.Chartwells didn't like to pay overtime. If anything went wrong, there policy was to take notes then tell you – more... it could lead to a disciplinary. – less

Nice place to work especially when you have young children
Customer Service Assistant (Current Employee), Reading – September 6, 2012
It always busy , I've learn how to understand children because some others are really difficult to understand. We always work as a team and everything went well, To explain to the kids why they should eat their vegetables because some of them they don't eat them at home and to make them love it. Making the kids happy and full at the same time.

fun working in schools with children
cook,unit manager (Former Employee), Kent – August 29, 2012
Pros: the holidays
Cons: unsupportive management, serious lack of training
working within a school with children and staff is very rewarding, meals are freshly prepared and cooked everyday, the menu is not always popular with young children which is often ignored by management, kitchen staff as a rule are very good and hardworking but there is a serious lack of training and support for the cooks, the hardest part of the job as – more... a cook is getting the management to listen to any feed back, the best part of the job are the children – less

fantastic place to work
head cook unit manager (Current Employee), east sussex – July 14, 2012
Pros: learning something new every day.
Cons: not enough time to do paper work.
a typical day at work for me is cooking for children in a primary school. taking dinner money and banking. ordering stock and stock control. making sure my staff know what jobs are needed to be done on their arrival. serving the children their dinners and paperwork, which there is a lot of... the hardest part of the job is all the paperwork but only – more... because of the small amount of time left each day to complete it all.. the most enjoyable part of my job is the cooking and meeting the children every dinner time and making sure they are more than happy with their chosen dinner.. overall i love my job. – less

Unreceptive Higher Management and Sorry Excuse for HR
Manager (Former Employee), Boston, MA – May 16, 2013
Pros: health care, meals, close relationships with co-workers and staff
Cons: little to no care about managers (lifes, health, sanity, etc), lying, unanswered/broken promises, manipulation, etc
As a salaried manager you were basically treated like a slave, working minimum 60 hours a week, without a thought at additional compensation. Most times you could hardly get a thank you, or would get yelled at if you tried to leave when it was slower and time would allow for you to recoup those extra hours worked.

Were not giving the support or tools – more... to do job properly, ie. budgets, contracts, training, etc. A LOT of favoritism and high up manager literally PUSHING his managers out of the company and account.

Witnessed the loss of over 18 managers and supervisors in a less than 3 year period under one person's "reign" and HR does not think anything is wrong with this. You call to put in Discrimination complaints, to ask questions about policy and procedures and receive inadequate answers, non at all, or told that the only option is to speak with a manager you are not comfortable with at all. Promised manager interviews to assess the situation that never came.

This lists go on and on. I hear not all of the accounts are like this, but my experience soured me on the whole company for good. I would never work for these corrupt people! – less

Great workplace with scratch made food
Culinary Associate (Current Employee), Charlotte, NC – May 6, 2013
Pros: great co-workers, variety to food for break, creative workplace
Cons: menu on 4 week rotate
I really like my job. I work at Johnson & Wales University at Campus Dining. We supply three meals a day to the students and other outside patrons. I have really improved my culinary and leadership skills. I have cooked more things than I expected. The management really focuses on constantly making improvements and works with the staff. My co-workers – more... vary from long time veterans to student interns that only work for three month spans. The hardest part of my job is dealing with the different tastes and needs of the 500 students we feed. I really like to see the things they like and creating a relationship with them all. – less

I was laid off because I made more money than someone else in the same position
Supervisor (Former Employee), Pensacola Fl. – April 29, 2013
Pros: it was great to work with different people.
Cons: management stabbing you in the back.
With the right management in place it was a fun working environment.
With the wrong management in place you had job insecurity, always looking over your back, and wondering when your next write-up will be.

Food Server (Former Employee), Russellville, AR – April 17, 2013
I would slice meat, cut vegateables, bread and slice cheesse.
I learned how to cook different things.
My boss was so sweet.
My co-workers were sweet also.
The hardest part of my job was getting all the meat sliced before we opened, there was so much and so little time.
The most enjoyable part was getting to meet so many different people.

Every day changing environment
Director of Dining (Current Employee), Carbondale, IL – April 8, 2013
A typical day at work is envolved around all aspects of the food service industy. I am responsible for all preperation, service, finacials, customers, employees. Mind you I have 4 well trained management team under me that have specific areas that they control.

I have been an employee and manager at Chartwells for almost 9 years. I began working for – more... Chartwells as a catering supervior and have worked my way to being Director of Dining. Through the different positions that I have had working for Chartwells I have learned to become a better decision maker, a top notch sales associate and a very good listener. I have taught myself to adapt to many situations some stressful some not. I have become proficient with P&L accounts and have managed my unit to be profitable.

My team has brought me success. My team of co-workers have came together and have brought out the best of our unit. My team is very knowledgeable and work very well together and have the understanding of hard work. I give the direction and they get the job done.

The most enjoyable part of my job is that is ever changing. Everyday is not the same. Wprking on a college campus I meet and interact with many different types of people from all different back grounds. I enjoy the costomer service aspect of my current position. – less

Fast paced work environment.
Stock Associate (Former Employee), Fort Lauderdale, FL – March 27, 2013
Pros: free lunch for employees
This is a job more oriented for students who attend the school. Most of the management is fair but as the ladder climbs higher, the more unfair it gets. The co-workers are extremely down-to-earth and fun to be around. They make the job seem easier than what it is. They are very helpful and actually care about your well-being. The hardest part about – more... everything is the unfair workload some positions have to endure. The most enjoyable parts are the free meals and the co-workers. – less
