fun workplace
Shop assistant (Former Employee), Huddersfield – April 11, 2013
All the staff were friendly and reliable. The store was clean and tidy, and this job helped me to develop my communication skills. i learned how to price stock and how to put it out on the shop floor, i also learned how to cull stock, and i learned how to deal with customer exchanges. the hardest part of the job was dealing with the deliveries, because – more... i had to check the stock, and sometimes i had more or less than what i needed. the most enjoyable part of the work was meeting lots of new people and getting good feedback of people for helping out. – less

Great for volunteers, terrible if paid
Volunteer (Current Employee), Nottingham – March 22, 2013
Pros: good charity doing much needed work
Cons: hours much longer than posted
There's something of a management crisis going on, with manager positions remaining vacant for long periods, and overworked and demoralised staff. Individual managers are clearly committed individuals genuinely doing their best in circumstances made more difficult than they need to be by cheese-paring and lack of empathy from above. The posted hours – more... for management positions are a joke. – less

Good working environment, though voluntary so I didn't make much money of course.
Sales Assistant (Former Employee), Bletchley, Milton Keynes – December 1, 2012
Pros: free experience for the workplace, no risk of lay-off.
Cons: some unfriendly customers, lack of pay.
Friendly working environment. Good thing to do if you can't find a paying job - gives you experience. Helps build skills for working in a shop. There was no risk of losing the job as any labour is a benefit. Friendly management, though obviously no salary. Hard to deal with some customers though many are kind.

Productive and varied working enviroment
Laboratory Technician (Former Employee), Strathclyde University – October 31, 2012
Pros: varied working enviroment
Cons: could be stressful at times
Provided technical support whilst conducting experimental procedures and manufacturing products for clinical trials, performing both to GMP and GLP whilst maintaining both the laboratory and sterile suite in appropriate working order.
Accrued extensive experience of using vapour hydraulic peroxide to sanitize machinery, units and isolators.
I felt I – more... had a good working relationship with management and fellow
workers.
Being focused at all times anticipating problems whilst performing complex processes.
Being involved at every aspect of the manufacturing process insured my workload was very varied which has given me great knowledge and experience. – less

Fun Workplace
Volunteer Sales Assistant (Current Employee), Coatbridge – October 3, 2012
Pros: i have gained retail experience
Cons: i enjoy working in cancer research
An average day at Cancer Research UK involves tagging and labelling clothes, stacking shelves and dealing with customer enquires as well as assisting customers and also requesting Cancer Research donors to Gift Aid their items which allows the Charity to get 20% extra profit from the government out of our donors taxes. I have learned that working in – more... a retail environment is ideal for me as you can make conversation with customers whilst getting jobs done. The hardest part about the job is dealing with tricky customers or not receiving enough items from donors. The most enjoyable part of the job is speaking to customers and keeping the customers happy. – less

FUN
Various, main till (Current Employee), Derby – September 22, 2012
Pros: meeting new people, confidence builder
Cons: nothing, abosultly nothing!
Im 19, I started to volunteer at Cancer research when I was 18. Although now I have started univeristy I am still going to visit when Im back in my hometown and do some shifts when they need someone or if they struggle I will come up and help. The typical day there is amazing. You get to meet a load of people who come in and meet the regulars. They – more... enjoy a great chat and are always friendly. You do get the butt heads come in as we are just accross the road from the pub but overall absoultly fantastic. The manger is an amazing person! I have been on the till, sorting out the donations in the pen, hanging and steaming. I basically do all the jobs apart from the Gift Aid. My job while I am on the till is pricing the jewerlly or others when she brings them down. The co-workers are loverly and they make you feel soo welcomming and we all mess around when upstairs and they are just another family too me. The hardest part of the job is proberly pricing as sometimes you dont knoww what to put on the pricetag and is worried that you priced it wrong. The most enjoyable part of the job is everything. The minute I walk in the door, up the stairs to the minute I go home. It is a loverly place to be. Even though I don't get paid, I spend my whole time in there, I have been there everyday for the past summer hoilday and I loved every moment of it. They are my second family! – less

Overall a good place to work, except it is voluntary
Sales Assistant (Current Employee), Bury – September 17, 2012
A typical day at work for me is to:
• Operate the till with no errors
• Sign customers up to Gift Aid, a government scheme that provides more money for the charity
• Organise goods on the shop floor for the maximum effect to customers
• Manual labour e.g. carrying large amounts of donated items up and down 3 stories or stairs
• Tag and price goods
 – more... Take a large sum of money to the bank to do the shops banking

I have learned a lot more about what goes on more on the paperwork side of running a business.
The management of the business is above satisfactory.
I enjoyed the company of my co-workers whilst I was there. They are very friendly and helpful.
The hardest part of the job is probably the manual labour.
The most enjoyable part of the job is my co-workers and customers, they are all so friendly. – less

Fun Workplace and for a great cause
Volunteer Worker (Current Employee), Walton-On-Thames – September 14, 2012
Cancer Research UK is a marvelous place to do voluntary work for the greatest cause of all. Even the smallest of tasks mean a lot and raising money for cancer research means a great deal to me since many family members have passed away from some sort of cancer related illnesses. Wonderful experience that every person should go through.
