One of the US's largest private companies, Black & Veatch (BV) is a leading global engineering, consulting, and construction firm specializing in infrastructure development for the energy, water, environmental, federal, and telecommunications markets. BV offers environmental consulting, operations and maintenance, security design and consulting, management consulting, and IT services. With offices worldwide, it has worked on coal, nuclear, and combustion turbine plants; drinking water and coastal water operations; and wireless and broadband installation. The company was founded in 1915 in Kansas City, Missouri, by engineers E. B. Black and Tom Veatch.
Kansas-based Black & Veatch has more than 110 offices worldwide and has completed projects in more than 100 countries.
BV is organized around key markets, which include energy, telecommunications, water, management consulting, and projects for the federal government.
The group's operations in the global water markets impact water quality and quantity throughout the water cycle: from source to treatment, to delivery, to wastewater collection and treatment. A key player in water treatment and wastewater treatment design, BV's water division works with utilities, governments, and industries worldwide. The company is seeing an increase in water projects following the economic recession, which stifled the flow of capital.
Black & Veatch posted $2.6 billion in revenue in 2011.
BV's telecommunications operations are growing quickly as communications infrastructure is being improved around the world. Clients include wireless and wireline operators, satellite networks, public safety agencies, municipalities, utilities, and various government agencies, including the departments of energy, defense, and Homeland Security, and the EPA and FAA. The business will continue to grow thanks to the Sprint/Samsung mobile network upgrade project. BV is working to provide wireless site development services to support the infrastructure project.
The company's energy division, which accounts for about 40% of revenues, is another growing segment. Clients are busy with new projects to meet the growing demand for energy. BV is involved in major US transmission line work, as well as power plant projects in places such as China, India, and the Middle East. Indeed, in 2012 BV expanded its operations in India to meet the country's growing infrastructure requirements.
