Productive gain in both job experience, and learning new skills
Leicestershire, Volunteer (Former Employee), Leicester, ENG – June 5, 2013
Pros: self confidence!.
Cons: heavy lifting!.
I arrive at work early, and check with my manageress what she would like me to do today during my shift, as it varies greatly from day, to day in voluntary work for a charity shop environment!, I perform till duties, sorting, steaming, and tagging, and I have picked up new skills during my time with banardo's, but I have mostly boasted my confidence – more... levels again!, and my self a steam levels too which helps me greatly!, I get on well with management, and my co-workers, and the hardest part of the job for me!, has to be the heavy lifting of the donations bags that arrive on a daily basis!, and I would say that the most enjoyable part of the job is making new friends!, through both my co-workers!, and customers alike!. – less

Fun place to work
Volunteer (Former Employee), Truro – June 3, 2013
I would work short shifts at Barnardo's and would spend my time their sorting through donations ready for the shop floor, and serving customers on the shop floor. This experience really gave me insight to how a charity shop ran and gave me the chance to work with a lot of interesting people. Management were really easy going and ran the shop well and – more... got along well with the staff. – less

Fun and Rewarding
Volunteer Independent Visitor (Current Employee), Bury Children's Rights – May 27, 2013
I am a volunteer where I take a Young Person in the care system out fortnightly to participate in recreational activities and to befriend them. I am independent from all other services involved in the social care needs of the Young Person. This is a highly valuable and rewarding experience and I hope to continue this during employment.

it paid the bills
sales assitant (Former Employee), canvey,basildon, leigh-on-sea – May 24, 2013
Pros: discount
Cons: attitude of manger, attitude of the area manger, don't like you having a family
a typical day would be opening the shop.
bringing in the donations from the front of the shop and then sorting them in to good stock or rubbish. using the till answering the phone to take address for pick up of furniture. then cashing up at the end of the day and doing the paperwork.

i learned very quickly not to believe everything i heard or was told – more... by my area manager.
the hardest part of the job as moving and sorting the furniture out.
the best part was making new friends and trying to have a laugh while we worked. – less

Applied several times for vacancy
Shop Manager and Shop Assisant (Former Employee), Dunoon – May 13, 2013
Dunoon, its a small town with a limited number of people applying for vacancies, or rather limited number with certain jobs skills. So you'd think that they would at least interview someone who has had experience running their own business looking for a change of scene. Not only did they not look at me for the managers job apparently Im not even suitable – more... as a shop assistant. How hard is it to work in a charity shop?

The store in question rarely has people in it, in fact it rarely has much to offer so I felt I could offer a change to try and bring more customers to their door.

They are advertising again for the same two positions I wish them well and good luck, Dunoon isnt an easy place to get to so they are still limited to the same number of people available to work – less

Opportunities to improve all of the time
Training Co-Ordinator (Former Employee), Newcastle upon Tyne – April 28, 2013
Pros: flexi time
Cons: government guidelines
Excellent place to work. Due to education cut back I was made redundant. I loved every aspect of the job , trying to make a difference with young people. I gained lots of confidence as each day was so unpredictable. Sad part of the job was sometime young people became there own victims and gave in to lifes presures.

Pros: free snacks and drinks
Cons: n/a
I currently work at Barnardo's and find it a very comfortable place for the new comers to learn.I feel comfortable in the enviroment of Barnardo's and have learned alot since i joined. Here my colleagues are very cooperative and friendy, they make me learn and give relevant advices to their coworkers. All the working team has full choice to work at – more... their own.I have learned how to work in a team and how to help others while on work, i am also very punctual and efficient when at work. They offer their employees snacks as well as lunch breaks depending upon their working hours.I havent found any hardest day at work yet as i am always ready to face new challenges in my work. I enjoy steaming, tagging and working in the store as well as on the shop floor to do replenishments. I welcome all my customers and always greet them. – less

Child Worker 2 (Former Employee), StHelens – January 23, 2013
Pros: job satisfaction
Cons: stress related to child abuse
I found Barnardo's to be good employers and dedicated to supporting children and staff.
I typical day at work would involve making appointments with children via parents and school. Support parents and foster carers also in relationships with children. I often worked alone and it was a paperless recording system, this could on occasion feel lonely.

The – more... hardest part of the work was managing all IT plus making appointments, recording, – less

never get to stay in the 1 shop for long
sales assistant (Former Employee), glasgow area – November 28, 2012
Pros: volunteers are fantastic, intresting people to work with
Cons: too many to list
Was shipped about from shop to shop always short of paid staff in other locations. Wages not bad but then extremely late nights on a Friday not getting home until 8-8:30 p.m after starting at 8:45 a.m. You only get paid from 9- 5 or 5:30 depending on store closing times.

nice place to work.
volunteer sales assistant (Current Employee), Liverpool – November 21, 2012
Pros: easy going work ethic
Cons: no salary due to volunteer placement
Barnardos is a good company to work for, however as it is only a volunteer job there is no salary involved which is not suitable for me. On the whole the manageement were pleasant and very thankful for the volunteers.

Productive
Shop Assistant (Former Employee), Greenock – September 21, 2012
Day would start by stock taking, then putting out new merchandise, then would go on the tills for half the day. Manager was good at setting out daily tasks ect, co workers were nice and friendly to work with. Wouldn't say there was any hard part of the job. most enjoyable thing would have to have been meeting new customers daily.

Satisfaction of achieving sales from donated goods to raise money for charity.
Branch Manager (Current Employee), Basingstoke – August 15, 2012
Pros: local, free parking, meeting lots of new people.
Cons: excess workload
My day consists of processing large amounts of donated stock and merchandising to maximize profits and stock management.
I have learned a lot about diversity and different peoples learning styles.
Being able to manage a large team of people, to work to their strengths, motivating and leading by example in order to get the team to work productively.
The – more... hardest part of the job is coping with the excess amounts of donations daily and being aware of Health and Safety at all times.
The best part of my day is dealing with the public and making the environment a fun place to be. – less

Sales Assistant (Current Employee), Hull, Prospect Centre – July 4, 2012
Volunteering with Barnardo's has been a wonderful experience; mostly made so by the hardworking and caring management that always look at for all of their employees. The management is always willing to tailor the experience according to the employees level pf experience and confidence, but also challenges any who wish it. Co-workers change regularly – more... due to the work experience and volunteering programs so you are always meeting new people, most of whom are wonderful and supportive. – less
