Expected to do the work of a full team and no prioritisation in place, most of the managers have never worked in the team they manage so therefore have no clue about the workloads. Barclays Capital has a very busy work environment. Every day brings new challenges in the ever changing fast paced world of Finance.
Over the 11 or so years I worked there I was given numerous opportunities to improve myself through training courses, work placements and projects. There are always opportunities if you know where to look. There are great – more... networking opportunites too, the more people you interact with, the better networks you can engage.
One of the reasons I worked for them for so long were the people I worked with, managers and colleagues. Everyone was very professional in the Operations area I worked, but there was also a good social aspect to the job with various events held throughout the year.

A typical day at work - I usually came in between 7:30-8:00am reviewed and replied to my emails, globally. This task varied in time frame since some days I'd reecive requests from other branches to approve new lines, increases, decreases, cancellation, etc. and credit lines had to be reviewed prior to approving anything.

Reviewed requests from sales – more... traders for new products and had close contact with Legal to review documentation for specific product and specific clouse prior to approving.

Daily management of the country risk sanctioning system including validation of country risk exposure and coordination of limit sanctioning and approvals.

Responsible for the daily review and authorization of customer segregated and secured reports sent to internal finance group, regulatory organizations and exchanges such as CFTC, FINRA, and FIA. Promoted within 3 years of starting there.

Working at Barclays was different everyday as changes in Management took place quite often. Many come and go in the department. We had to adapt to company policy changes more often.

There was no balance in mixture of people (locals and foreigners) as the recruitment was done by job agencies. Though it is a UK bank but the common language was not English – more... that has prevented many of us ignorant of information as it was not shared using English. Many times I felt out of place but it did not stop me from performing my duties to my best of capabilities. When I joined the team, I had 3 rotating shift. But as time went by there was 6 to 7 shifts but no rotation. The shifts were planned based on discretion of shift managers who were given the authority by the department manager.

I had great time providing my services through e-mail and phone. I had supported almost 90 to 100 applications with account administration and troubleshooting. i was keen to train and guide the newcomers to the team. Since I loved the job,I had stayed in the job almost 5 years. My greatest regret was not being able to upgrade my skills in IT while working as my working shifts prevented me from committing to a good course to upgrade my skills. – less

On a daily basis I deal with between 50-100 events, both large and small scale, as well as ongoing projects and special requests from Barclay's executive board. I find my job highly rewarding in the sense that when an event takes place without incident or mishap, I am personally responsible for it. • Working as primary liaison with Business, QA and Development teams for major releases, recreation of customer issues, subsequent patch testing and successful release of patches and service packs to clients.
• Managing and performing hands on project planning, auditing of system requirements, creation of documentation, tracking progress metrics and – more... defects through Quality Center and mentoring the off-shore team.
• Coordinated with the offshore team the project deliverables and making sure the project deadlines are met in order to deployment the application in production on time.
• Setup walkthroughs and live meeting demos for QA offshore team to get the initial view and feel of the application under test.
• Conducted Gap analysis on scenarios and scripts created by the QA offshore team to make sure all the requirements were covered.
• Performed Data Profiling of current state of data in the Data Warehouse by doing Data Analysis using advanced SQL Queries and Microsoft Excel, finding Gaps in Data and formulating solutions for the same
• Involved in producing various reports by extracting basic data from Oracle tables using Toad and sorting and summing the data in different ways.
• Worked closely with the UAT team and assisted them when needed.

Hardest part of the job: Maintaining stakeholder engagement, as support from senior management was compromised after the Global Head of Ops (original program sponsor and key point of escalation) left the firm. This subsequently led to a reduction in overall participation by most of the business lines.
Most enjoyable part of the day: Successfully utilizing the acquired skills, techniques and problem solving methodologies needed to effectively and efficiently complete each project phase; Also, daily interactions with our development & production support teams, leading to a better understanding of the technical processes that must be carried out to ensure successful metrics delivery to our clients in Operations. – less
