Busy Engineering Design Office
Engineering Support Technician (Former Employee), Darlington – April 17, 2013
Pros: good working hours, local office location, friendly staff
Cons: not much scope for advancement if contracting as non engineer
A typical day involves answering phones & providing technical support. Replying to e-mail support requests and troubleshooting printers, phones, computer hardware & software.

Working in a small support team, providing support to around 100-200 engineers in a design office environment.

Management & business structure a little complex, discipline leads, – more... senior engineers etc - most people generally friendly.

Hardest part of the job would involve troubleshooting specialist Engineering software and dealing with 3rd party software support companies.

The most enjoyable aspect of the job, is resolving problems and keeping engineers happy in a productive environment. – less

Relaxed yet professional workplace
Publishing Technician (Current Employee), Vancouver, BC – October 23, 2012
AMEC has provided me with excellent work experience as a publishing technician. Our department is very relaxed and the environment is a comfortable one to work in. Everyone is very professional and works as a team to ensure projects are completed properly and on time, meeting the expectations of our clients. I've gained a lot of experience in the use – more... of Microsoft Office (most projects use Word and PowerPoint as their base), in working as a team, and in project organization. – less

Great People
Senior Administrative Assistant (Former Employee), Durham, NC – May 16, 2013
Pros: surrounded by supportive people
Cons: the larger we grew, the less "personal" everything became.
No typical day as every day had its own challenges. Wore many hats but that's what made it fun to go to work each day.

Overall assessment, my job @ amec was very challenging but with my skill and expertise I could finish the project on time and less budget.
Electrical & Control Designer / Drafter (Current Employee), 111 Dunsmuir Vancouver, BC – May 12, 2013
Pros: we are entitled to have a free foods every friday morning at 10am
Cons: sometimes multiple project to finish at the same time.
I'm very much enjoying my day at AMEC because my colleague were very supportive specially to my projects. I learned a lot from their experiences and how to handle stress situation effectively. The hardest part of my job was when the software I'm using got crushed and takes time to put in normal condition.

Good job for solidifying the idea to get an education
Pipefitter Helper (Former Employee), Clyattville, GA – April 22, 2013
Pros: good real-world exposure
Cons: georgia summer
Days started at 7:00, when the crew would sign a safety sheet and receive a safety briefing. After that, the work would begin and carry on until the 9:30 break. Work would resume again at about 9:45, and carry on until noon, when everyone would break for lunch. At 12:30, work would resume again and go until the 3:00 break, resuming again at 3:15, and – more... ending at 5:30.
My job as a Helper would be to run around running messages, getting tools, standing hole watch, rigging pipe, cleaning the job sites up, and basically anything else that needed to get done that didn't require specialized training.
I would frequently practice welding on my lunch breaks.
My coworkers were a very industrious group, earning their pay. Management was always in the loop with what the other foremen and managers were doing. – less

A company that was sometimes difficult to work for..
Senior Project Scientist (Former Employee), Asheville, NC – April 11, 2013
Pros: access to large industry clients
Cons: minimal raise in five years even though very good evaluations
This company as formerly MACTEC was corporate driven with individual offices functioning as cost centers--sometimes having to compete among one-another and rarely working well together.
The company may have broadened itself to include too many services.
The positive side to this was that clients using traditional engineering services were more accessible – more... and could sometimes be swayed into using niche services such as environmental permitting and stream restoration as needed.
This segway provided various large project opportunities however these projects were often managed and, or budgeted by non-natural resources professionals. Clients may have been promised cost that were way too low, for example, then the buck was passed to technical managers and specialist tasked to figure out a way to make it work within budget..
Co-workers were friendly but it was a very 9 to 5 type atmosphere with multiple commodity type engineers--whom did similar projects over and over again.
As a niched professional it was especially difficult to move up the ladder in this company. A company more accustomed to traditional engineering and the associated professional growth in that sector.
Enjoyed traveling and working on the occasional well budgeted, large industry project..
note that company may have improved since merging with AMEC in which case I would certainly consider working for AMEC.. – less

I am a part of a great team and AMEC is a large company that can provide a lot of growth potential to it's employees.
SR Accounting Administrator (Current Employee), Alpharetta, GA – March 23, 2013
We start the day by prioritizing our work load. Each day is different so we look at everybody's volume and from that I decide what I need to do first and then for the rest of the day. The cash application is the most important so I make sure I take the time I need to apply it correctly. Responding to our customers (both our offices and our clients) – more... is important so I make sure I find the time to respond to everyone within a reasonable time frame either with a solution or to let them know I am working on their issue. Some of my co-workers are easy to work with and some are not. We do, however, all try to work together so that we have a good environment and the job gets done. – less

Safety Coordinator (Former Employee), Crossett, AR – March 15, 2013
I leanrned that when managers are willing to be hands on to teach people learn better. Coworkers are great with this company. The only hard part for me is the layoffs that comes with construction jobs.

A good place to work. Good focus on employees.
Environment & Infrastructure, Associate Consultant (Current Employee), Calgary, AB – January 31, 2013
Pros: office is close to my home and commute is short
Cons: hours and expectations (perhaps some of my own) are long!
I am involved in the PM duties of three projects (two government clients and one private sector) in Calgary that include my technical and management skills in assisting with the preparation of regulatory applications and project related scoping studies.

I also share/coordinate PM duties for three EA applications for AMEC clients in BC. Duties are shared – more... with AMEC staff in our BC offices. My role is as a mentor and facilitator to assist as well in communications with the client and helping staff to understand project scope and focus on baseline and assessment duties.
My typical day starts early and is constant communications and management of personnel and project tasks including a lot of work I do as well. Hardest part of the job is balancing priorities and keeping staff on track and focused on schedules and budgets.

Hardest part of the job is keeping up to the many demands, balancing all the meetings and still getting work completed!

Enjoyable part is being able to get some of my own tasks completed. – less

Previous contractor in Calgary. Some people are nice, but the electrical department is not the best area to work for in Calgary. Management is lacking of a lot management skills. Very often you can see Leads yelling and raising voice to others, very unprofessional ... in front of other people. There is not career development there, even thought they promised you a lot of expectations, blah, blah.... No honesty either. Some managers show a great smile to you, but behind ... they are hypocrites...In general, the company is great, but some managers are not giving the big reputation to the company. Wondered why a lot of people is leaving this department? Great and Good people are leaving, others are laying off. A lot of lays off... Sorry for the nice people there... but because of these mean managers, leads. Be a political person if your want to keep your job there, smile to your bosses, laugh of their jokes...
